CfGS Executive Director Speaks at Geoscience Education Forum
“There is a dearth of knowledge regarding geoscience education at the basic level in Ghana.” — Dr. Yvonne Sena Akosua Loh, Executive Director of CfGS.
Dr. Loh addressed this urgent gap during her remarks at the Geoscience Education Field Officer (GEFO) program hosted by the University of Ghana. In her speech, she emphasized the importance of integrating geoscience into Ghana’s basic education system and highlighted the Center’s advocacy for curriculum reform and grassroots awareness.
Dr. Loh Delivers Keynote at Launch of Africa Women in Geoscience Initiative
On Saturday, 15th March 2025, Dr. Yvonne Sena Akosua Loh, Executive Director of CfGS, delivered the keynote address at the official launch of the Africa Women in Geoscience Initiative — a landmark event focused on empowering women in geoscience across the continent.
The initiative, which includes impactful programs like #GeoHERitageEons, aims to break barriers, amplify female leadership, and promote the conservation of Africa’s rich geoheritage. In her address, Dr. Loh emphasized the importance of mentorship, representation, and sustainable development in shaping a more inclusive geoscience community.
Inspiring Girls in STEM: CfGS Marks International Day of Women and Girls in Science
On February 11th, 2025, CfGS Executive Director, Dr. Yvonne Sena Akosua Loh, joined the Ghana Education Service to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science under the theme: “Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science.”
Dr. Loh addressed high school girls across the Greater Accra Region, encouraging them to pursue careers in STEM and sharing her journey as a geoscientist. The event highlighted the importance of female mentorship and representation in science.
CfGS in collaboration with the Department of Earth Science orgranizes Geoscience Awareness Workshop for High School Teachers
The Department of Earth Science, in collaboration with the Canadian High Commission, has organized its first-ever workshop on Earth Science Awareness Creation for high school science teachers under the theme “Science and The Earth We Live In.”
The event aligned with CfGS’s mission to promote geoscience education and public engagement, advocating for the formation of Earth Science Clubs in second-cycle schools. Speakers, including Dr. Yvonne Sena Akosua Loh and Prof. Daniel Asiedu, emphasized the urgency of integrating geoscience into school curricula and equipping educators to champion sustainable development through science.
Dr. Marian Selorm Sapah Calls for Stronger Geoscience Education at IUGS-COGE Workshop
Dr. Marian Selorm Sapah, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Earth Science, University of Ghana, and Convener of the upcoming 2025 IUGS-COGE Geoscience Field Education Officer Workshop, has underscored the urgent need to strengthen geoscience education in Ghana to promote environmental responsibility.
Speaking at the IUGS–Commission on Geoscience Education (COGE) workshop in Accra (February 27 – March 1), Dr. Sapah emphasized that the limited presence of geoscience in Ghana’s education system contributes to poor environmental awareness and unsustainable practices. She advocated for curriculum development, expert-led educational materials, and increased collaboration among policymakers, educators, and media to advance geoscience literacy. The workshop concluded with a practical field trip to the Shai Hills Game Reserve, reinforcing the connection between geoscience education and responsible land use.
