Profile of Management

Dr. Yvonne S. A. Loh

Yvonne Sena Akosua Loh, BSc, MPhil, PhD, MGHIG

Executive Director & Communication Lead, CfGS

Dr. Yvonne Sena Akosua Loh is the Executive Director and Communication Lead of CfGS, as well as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Earth Science at the University of Ghana, Legon. With over 15 years of experience in teaching, research, and professional service, she also serves as the Director of Terra-Pangaea Resources, a geological exploration and management consultancy company. Her expertise encompasses groundwater resource assessment, hydrochemistry, and sustainable water management, with a research focus on groundwater governance for irrigation and multiple uses. 

Throughout her academic journey,Dr. Loh has earned several prestigious awards, including the DANIDA-ENRECA Hydrogeological Project award, the ORID PhD Research Sponsorship, and the Rochester International Council Fellowship for Doctoral Thesis Completion. She has played a pivotal role in shaping geoscience education in Ghana, integrating hands-on fieldwork, laboratory training, and industry collaboration into her teaching. She has supervised numerous undergraduate, master’s, and PhD students, fostering the next generation of geoscientists. Dr. Loh has led and contributed to significant research projects on coastal aquifer pollution, groundwater sustainability, and water governance. She has served as a Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-Investigator (Co-PI) on projects funded by organizations such as DANIDA, USAID, AGATE, and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. Her research has resulted in high-impact publications in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and conference presentations.

Additionally, she actively contributes to academic publishing as a reviewer for journals such as Journal of African Earth Sciences and Innovation and Green Development. Beyond research and teaching, Dr. Loh has held leadership roles within the university, serving as an Examinations Officer, a former Graduate Programme Coordinator, and a PhD Programme Coordinator. She has also been involved in academic boards, committees, and curriculum development initiatives. Dr. Loh is passionate about professional and community service, particularly in advancing gender inclusion in STEM. She is a Council Member of the Ghana Institution of Geoscientists (GhIG) and chairs the Mentoring and Education Committee of Women in Mining Ghana (WIMGH). She actively promotes STEM education, mentorship, and gender equality in geosciences.Committed to environmental sustainability and geoscience advocacy, Dr. Loh continues to contribute to research, education, and policy discussions.

Prof. Daniel Asiedu

Daniel Kwadwo Asiedu, BSc, MSc, PhD, FGHIG, FGS, FGA

Research Lead, Center for Geoscience Studies (CfGS)

Prof. Daniel Asiedu is the Research Lead of CfGS. He is also a Professor of Geology at the Department of Earth Science, University of Ghana. He is an internationally recognized researcher in the field of sedimentary geology. He has over 25 years’ university teaching and research experience and has undertaken several extension activities mostly in the areas of geoscience education and geological consultancy services. He has worked at the University of Munich (LMU) in Germany as a Humboldt Research Fellow and at Okayama University in Japan as a JSPS Research Fellow. Before joining the University of Ghana, he worked with the Ghana Geological Survey Department as a Geologist.

Professor Asiedu has taught several courses, largely in the areas of sedimentary geology and geochemistry, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He has mentored many young geoscientists and lecturers and has also supervised more than 60 postgraduate students. He has published over 50 articles in high impact peer-reviewed journals and over 50 book chapters, conference papers and technical reports.

Professor Asiedu is a Fellow of the following professional bodies: Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Geological Society of London, and the Ghana Institution of Geoscientists. He is also a member of the following professional associations: Geological Society of America (GSA), Geological Society of Africa (GSAf), American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), and Society for Sedimentary Geologists (SEPM).

Dr. Daniel Kwayisi

Daniel Kwayisi, BSc, MPhil, PhD, MGHIG

Resource Mobilization Lead, Center for Geoscience Studies (CfGS)

Dr Daniel Kwayisi is a Grants Officer of CfGS and a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Earth Science, University of Ghana. He has a solid background in petrology and tectonics, having earned a Bachelor of Science (Honors) degree in Geology, a Master of Philosophy in Geology from the University of Ghana, and a Doctoral degree in Geology from the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. 

Daniel Kwayisi has been conducting extensive research on the Precambrian Geology of Ghana for over a decade. His academic contributions are evident in the numerous publications he has published in both local and international journals. He is actively involved in base metal and industrial mineral exploration, from prospecting to consulting role. Daniel Kwayisi is an active member of the geological community. He is a Life Member and Information Officer of the Geological Society of Africa.

He is also a member of the Ghana Institute of Geoscientists, where he serves as the Secretary of the Elections Committee and a member of the Conference Committee. Other international geological memberships include the Young Earth Scientists Network, AMREC Working Group, the Geological Society of South Africa, and the European Association of Geochemistry. His association involvement reflects his dedication and active local and international participation.

Dr. Marian Selorm Sapah

Marian Selorm Sapah, BSc, PhD, MGHIG

Resource Mobilization Co-lead and Office Manager, Center for Geoscience Studies (CfGS)

Dr. Marian Selorm Sapah is a Grants writer and the Office Manager of CfGS. She is a distinguished Senior Lecturer at the Department of Earth Science, University of Ghana and a member of both IUGS-COGE and its GEFO sub-commission With a robust academic background and a passion for Geoscience education and research, Dr. Sapah has made significant contributions to her field. She holds a BSc degree in Geology from the University of Ghana and a PhD in Earth Chemistry from The Australian
National University. 

Her research interests span Geochemistry, Cosmochemistry, Environmental Geoscience, and Geoscience education, and she has published extensively in these areas. Her expertise is recognized globally, as she is a member of several professional associations, including the Geological Society of Africa (GSAf), the Meteoritical Society (METSOC), the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), and the Africa Initiative of Planetary and Space Science (AFIPS), where she is a founding member. She also serves as the Public Affairs Officer for the Ghana Institute of Geoscientists (GhIG) and is a board member of the Geochemical Society.

Beyond academia, Dr. Sapah is a committed advocate for women and girls in STEM, working to create opportunities and support networks for young women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). She is also dedicated to environmental sustainability, promoting practices and policies that protect natural resources and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Additionally, Dr.  Sapah is enthusiastic about mentorship and public speaking, often engaging with students and professionals to share her knowledge and inspire others.

Dr. Marian Selorm Sapah’s research endeavors, commitment to Geoscience education, advocacy for women in STEM, dedication to environmental sustainability, and passion for mentorship and public speaking make her a leading figure in her field, both in Ghana and internationally. Her work continues to inspire and shape the future of Geoscience education and research.

Emmanuel Agyekum

Emmanuel Atuobi Agyekum, BSc

Research Assistant, Center for Geoscience Studies (CfGS)

Emmanuel Atuobi Agyekum serves as a Research Assistant at CfGS, where he supports the Research Lead in executing a broad range of research activities. His responsibilities include data collection, analysis, and ensuring the quality and scientific integrity of all research outputs.

Emmanuel also contributes meaningfully to geoscience education and research initiatives, with a particular interest in resource management and policy formulation. His flexible and dedicated approach allows him to support additional tasks across the organization as needed, playing a vital role in the Center’s mission to promote sustainable development through geoscience.
